Dramway Booklet Launch & Walk 26.9.06
Bristol Evening Post
A Historic 19th century tramway which used to transport coal is being promoted as a route for walkers. South Gloucestershire Council is launching a booklet to encourage people to use the Dramway as a recreational walk.
The nine-mile route was used to take coal from mines in Coalpit Heath to the River Avon. It has become a popular path, but the council wants more people to use it to improve their health.
The booklet will be launched by the Walk to Health Initiative at Bitton Railway Station, home of the Avon Valley Railway, on Tuesday, September 26.
On the day there will be a short presentation on the history of the Dramway, followed by a four-mile walk, led by Walk to Health volunteers.
The walk will take in sections of the Dramway Path, the River Avon Trail, Monarch's Way and Community Forest Path.
The event will start at 10am at Bitton Railway Station.
Pat Hockey (Lib-Dem, Frampton Cotterell), executive member for planning, transportation and the strategic environment, will help launch the booklet.
She said: "The Dramway is an interesting and varied walk that traces the history of one of the last horse-drawn railways to be built in the country.
"We hope that the booklet will be of interest to people taking part in the Walk to Health initiative, as the route skirts the Kingswood area.
"The Walk to Health project aims to get more people walking in their own communities."
To book a place on the walk ring 01454 863776 by Friday, September 22.
