TRAIN IS A REAL LIFELINE

Joyce Tyson, from Redfield, uses the train to get her to Clifton, where she works as a Pilates instructor. Ms Tyson, aged 48, used to drive but has stopped using her car and instead uses the Severn Beach Railway service from Lawrence Hill and sometimes the bus.

A day return ticket on the train from Lawrence Hill to Clifton Down costs Ms Tyson ú1.40 - meaning she spends just ú7 per week getting to and from work.

Ms Tyson said: "I have been using the train for years now ... It's a real life line.

"I occasionally use the car but I prefer not to.

"During the week I work in the evenings and had to drive across town early evening - I got sick of getting stuck in traffic in Old Market and St Paul's.

"It's very cheap to travel on the train at the moment, when the price of fuel is so off-putting, but I am more concerned with pollution.

"We live in a time when there is great environmental concern and everyone should be looking for different ways to travel.

"You are going to get more exercise by cycling or walking to work than you are just by getting in the car. The Government wants us to cut down on short car journeys, but they are not making it easy.

"The Severn Beach line needs support and I'm keen to make sure it does not get scrapped."

Ms Tyson says her partner, Brett Killington, is also doing his bit for the environment by car-sharing to Swindon whenever he can.

I used it to get to work the other week in Avonmouth.
The ticket was pretty cheap and it was a pleasant little journey.
Bit of a shame I had to ask a mate to give me a lift back because there was no return between 5 and 7. Would of had to wait nearly 1 1/2 hrs for the train after work! We no return service at 6 for commuters, don't they wont people to use the train for this...

Someone on the National Preservation website has thoughtfully posted this item on Guided Buses. Enjoy.
