Ex Bitton 'Black 5'

Post by free2grice »

I paid a visit to the Mid-Hants Railway yesterday and was pleased to see the ex Bitton 'Black 5' 45379 in service. The loco is facing west and so I went to the 1-60 approach to Medsted station to watch and hear the loco pass. I was not to be disappointed. The loco blasted it's way up the incline. Very impressive indeed. My thanks go to the folk who in the early days of preservation had the insight to save such a fine machine. <BJ>

Hello free2grice. I too, have an attachment to that particular loco because, as a member of the nascent Bristol Suburban Railway Society, I was present [1974?]when it arrived at Bitton from whichever scrapyard it was. A great pity that it never ran on the AVR but good that it is in action elsewhere.

If you look on the Bitton page of the website you will see my picture from that day.

45379 was performing at the Churnet Valley Railway last weekend and jolly well it did perform, too!
Here is a link to some video I took on the Saturday, mainly on the 1 in 49 from Leekbrook Junction to Ipstones summit. The echoes around the valley on the way up the bank were superb!
