Hello all,
Hoping any of you out there can recall the working timetable for passenger trains between Bristol TM and Mangotsfield ie. departure
and arrival times and whether there was any comparison between steam and diesel? On a push bike it can be done in 15 minutes between the 2 at a push and noted 24mph over the top of the bank at Fishponds...what kind of speeds did expresses manage over the top ?!
Lastly were there any proposed stations between Fishponds and TM considering all other routes had intermediate stations not far from TM?
Many thanks
Mike

Bristol TM to Mangotsfield times
The figures given in the June 1964 - June 1965 WTT are :
Diesel (depending on load and locomotive) 9.5 - 10 minutes
Steam (unassisted) 13 minutes
If banking assistance was required, the time would be longer, if the train stopped outside Barrow Road Shed for the Banker.

I dare say others will be along before long to fill in a few more details but here comes my four-pennorth
Point to-point timings in steam days would depend on the class of locomotive and the booked weight and class of the train. My 1959 Working Tmetable shows no passing times for up express trains at Fishponds, and the times allowed BTM-Mangotsfield were as follows (departure times from Bristol shown):
01.10 Sheffield 13 mins pass
07.40 Bradford 14 mins stop
08.40 Sheffield 14 mins stop
10.30 Newcastle 14 mins stop
13.50SO Paignton - Derby 13 mins pass + 1min recovery time
14.15 Newcastle 14 mins stop
16.09 Wolverhampton (Cornishman) 13 mins pass
16.20 Gloucester 14 mins stop (non stop BTM-Mangotsfield and a stopper thereafter)
17.00 York 14 mins stop
19.25 Newcastle 14 mins stop
19.45FO Sheffield 13 mins pass
20.15 Derby parcels 16 mins stop
23.10SX Crewe perishables 17 mins pass
In the down direction things were rather more complicated because most express trains had receovery time built in to the schedules of anything between 1 and 4 minutes. Extracting that recovery time generally gives net times in the region of 9 to 11 minutes from passing Mangotsfield, and generally 11 minutes from a standing start.
The line was officially dieselised from September 1962 (although steam could still be seen from time to time at least until the summer of 1964) but, by then, no expresses were booked to stop in the down direction so no direct comparisons can be made. It should be remembered that the main reason for stopping expresses at Mangotsfield at all was to connect with Bath trains, and by then somebody must have sussed that you could charge passengers extra to travel via Bristol! Furthermore, if they only wanted to go to Bath, there were a lot more and faster trains from BTM to Bath Spa than there were on the Midland route.
The only stopping expresses in the up direction post-dieseliasation were the 07.45 Bradford, 10.40 Newcastle and the 19.25 Mail. The public timetable for 1965 shows the 07:45 allowed 10 minutes to a Mangotsfield stop, and the other two 11 minutes. Whether those times were ever kept if a "Jubilee" was given the job is something I can't help you with!
Finally, if you can do Bristol to Mangotsfield on a push bike in 15 minutes then you're a better man than I! (Mind you, what with my age and the fags its quite something that I can still ride that bloody bank at all!!)
