Rocket at Bitton

Post by madhattie »

Had a phone call from my dad this afternoon to say that the steam loco 'Rocket' had arrived at Bitton. Unfortunately he didn't have his camera with him

Apparently there for a few days if you want to get some shots. (going Wed he thinks)

popped over to Bitton this morning and just caught glimpse of Rocket steaming over bridge and towards bath. Waited around in hope of seing it return but the loco is apparently being run-in and was sadly ( for me due to lack of time) being run-in down towards end of line. Shame as I was armed with camera. Will be gone by end of week. Looked like mr Antells lorry waiting in car park to do the honours.

When does it leave the AVR?

The Points West report seemed to imply that this engine was in the Forest of Dean.

Rocket will not be running at Bitton on Wednesday. Will be leaving Bitton on Thursday to go to NRM.
The lorry is not Mr. Antells buit belongs to the Flour Mill.

Was anything posted on the Avon Valley web site, I can't find anything. I would have thought something as interesting as this would have been put on their web site, Regards, J M H.

Nothing was put on the AVR website, as the Flour Mill requested no publicity as they would deal with it.

It will not be running Thursday (today) as it will be leaving for the NRM York.

Just to reiterate shovel's comments, nothig was posted on our website until after it arrived as we were requested not to publicise it. Hope you all had chance to see it.

No disrespect intended for the AVR but I just wondered why the AVR was used by the Flour Mill for testing the loco when the Dean Forest Railway was so much closer to their base ?

To commemorate the visit of the replica 'Rocket', the AVR had produced a limited edition print. More details here:

I acquired one of these, as a birthday present. Though the print itself is fine, I was a bit disappointed to discover the accompanying text contained some basic spelling errors, such as originaly and sucessful. "Stephensons Rocket" is a little careless, too.
