THE CHESTER EXPLORER
Saturday 13th September, 2008
In association with the East Somerset Railway

VISIT HISTORIC CHESTER or LLANGOLLEN (with its STEAM RAILWAY)

This excursion will take you under the Severn into South Wales for a scenic journey north on the Marches Line, the name given to the route that leads through Abergavenny and into the hills before descent to Hereford, on the River Wye. Gradually we climb again, through Leominster to Ludlow and Craven Arms, after which there is a steeper ascent to Church Stretton, in its deep cleft between the hills. Downhill we run to cross the Severn again at Shrewsbury, then climb again to Gobowen, where you can alight for :

LLANGOLLEN: Join a road coach for the short trip to delightful Llangollen, where you should have a break of over three hours. Alternatively, remain with the coach for a scenic tour via the Horseshoe Pass. Supplementary fare: ú5 Adult, ú3 Junior.

LLANGOLLEN RAILWAY: You can also pre-book for a steam train ride along the attractive Dee Valley to Carrog and back. Supplementary fare : ú12 Adult, ú8 Junior, to include coach transfer from and back to Gobowen and the train ride.

Close to the station is Llangollen Canal Wharf, from where there are horse-drawn local trips or a motor boat cruise to Pontcysllte Aqueduct, the 1805 masterpiece of Thomas Telford - fares not included - book at Llangollen Wharf on the day subject to availability.

Or remain with the train for the journey via Wrexham to CHESTER. This city was founded by the Romans and is one of the most interesting in Britain. Although repaired and altered through medieval times right up until 1966, the city walls are now the most complete in Britain, with parts dating back to AD120. There are also structures and relics from the Saxons, Danes and Normans, although much of the centre dates from after the Civil War. There is a Cathedral and a Castle, the Gothic Town Hall, the Roodee Racecourse, a medieval shopping centre (the Rows), Cheshire Military Museum, Grosvenor Museum, Dewa Roman Experience, cruises on the Dee, or walks along the Shropshire Canal, with its deep sandstone cutting and locks down to the River Dee. All in all there is plenty of choice in what to see and do in the three or so hours that we are expecting to have for exploration.

It is expected that this train will be hauled throughout by a pair of MendipRail Class 59 diesels.

This excursion was advertised in Western Daily last week using a picture of a western hauling stock but this is probably using a library picture. Unless anyone knows to the contrary it's still a pair of class 59s
