Is this Weston or Gloucester?
Is this Weston or Gloucester?
This may sound an odd question from the subject but I was looking on ebay at lunch today (a conversation started on there being items from the recent pier fire turning up on ebay and so I had a look) and found this picture for sale.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RAILWAY-NEGATIVE- ... .m14.l1318
It says the picture was taken at Weston or possibly Gloucester. To me, it isn't W-s-M because I have never seen a picture of tracks on what would be the right side of platform 1. The curve is right for Weston with P2 on the left and P1 on the right of the picture but those sidings look wrong.
Any ideas guys?

My first thought was Gloucester Eastgate. Have a look at this http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stat ... ndex.shtmlDonkey wrote:This may sound an odd question from the subject but I was looking on ebay at lunch today (a conversation started on there being items from the recent pier fire turning up on ebay and so I had a look) and found this picture for sale.

it's from a different angle but the station buildings in the background seem the same to me.

That is not Weston the footbridge is wrong. in this shot of Weston you can just see the footbridge

It looks different.
There is also the fact that the peak must have being going south for the curve of the track if it was weston, so the shadows are wrong.

Glouceter Eastgate
Yep, definately Gloucester Eastgate. The footbridge gives it away - it was very long and went over to the other station (GW). The Peak (Class 45) would have been on a Bristol train - a very common working for the class during the 60's, which would have taken the Midland road from Westerleigh through Mangotsfield to Temple Meads.
This was of course when the Tuffley loop was still open, meaning soutbound trains for Bristol could still call at Gloucester (and vice versa) and regain the down main line to Bristol without reversing.
They closed the Tuffley loop because of the number of level crossings causing traffic chaos in Gloucester during the 60's - thereby making Gloucester a back water on the national network to this very day.
Nowadays, those level crossings would be called "traffic calming measures"! Such is progress.

Jules, you have answered something for me as well.
I remember back in the sixties 1963 to be exact, going from Bristol I think it was actually Mangotsfield all the way to Edinburgh Haymarket, and we stopped at Gloucester with no reverse moves the only time we had a change of end for the loco was i think Carstairs. We were hauled by a peak and never got to a speed that done anything for us.
It is the return journey that will stick in my mind for ever, on the return we were going mad as most of us were timing and we all confirmed that we had hit the ton and we were being pulled by a Scot, it was glorious, I am sure it was going down Shap. What i do remember is the whole train was rocking and rolling, we were hanging from the windows all trying to see this Scot at work up front.
Oh happy days
