Work Starts on New Additions To The Station (AVR Bitton)

Building work has begun on a new buffet and toilets at the Avon Valley Railway. The project was started with a ceremony attended by Councillor Sandra O'Neill, chairwoman of South Gloucestershire Council and other dignitaries.

The Avon Valley Railway, which is based at Bitton Station, has grown to become one of region's premier leisure facilities.

Last year 100,000 people visited the railway, which is mostly run by volunteers. The organisation will be investing around ú450,000 in the new buildings.

The finished project will benefit not only railway passengers, but other leisure groups such as tourists, walkers, cyclists and the local community.

AVR Heritage Trust chairman Bob Hitchings said: "Our buffet staff has struggled manfully for some time to cope with increasing visitor numbers

"Added to that, the station toilets are not sufficient to cope with demand, especially for our disabled visitors. When completed, this new block will vastly improve both of those situations.

"Obviously it's up to us to find the money for this project. The council has limited funds but will be supporting various aspects of the development."

Mrs O'Neill said: "I think it's wonderful that these people willingly give up their spare time to make sure that others enjoy this superb leisure facility."

Subject to funding it is anticipated that the project will be completed next year.

The station at Bitton opened in 1974 with a single engine and just 100 yards of track.

It now has three miles of track and two steam engines.

Earlier this year the AVR announced an ambitious ú1 million plan to double the length of its track and build a new station at Newbridge, near Bath. This project is expected to take up to 15 years.
