This is the original forum of the Bristol Railway Archive that existed between 2003 and 2013. I finally rescued it after it seemed unrecoverable after a large crash. I have made it available for viewing. It is locked, all posts to the new version please!
Use this forum to talk about the railways in and around Bristol, or for any off-topic stuff you want to share. Also request photos and information that you are missing.
Hi Tugboat you may have seen it already but for a good shot of Bath Rd shed in 1952 have a look at the film The Titfield Thunderbolt
The main station they run into is in fact BTM in what was the old fish dock
Right at the end of the Film there is a view of Bath Rd Bridge and right across the shed, you can see the face of the big clock on the front of the shed. I tell my Grandson I must have seen every hour of the day and night on that old clock Now there is nothing there at all
Can I ask a question? As a kid I remember seeing (at least i think I do) the old turn table at the back of the sheds. If you look at the excellent ariel photos on www.maps.live.com you can clearly see the out line of where it was. Now comparing that recent view to where this pic was taken:
If you can be patient I can find out when the tables went wherever on the 1st wednesday meet in the railway club however there was one at the back of the shed near where the photo shows and there was one in the coal field I think ok for now more later .
Thanks tug boat, the exact location can clearly be seen on this aerial pic, ive now sussed out how to show the exact spot. My point is though the earlier shots looks as though its been completly covered, this later shot shows the spot.
Iknew I had it right because my dear Dad worked in the soft water plant and died in the machine room but when the foreman told me he had passed away I thought he had been hit by a loco going on the table the line to the table was quite close to the machine room entrance. Very good arial photo of a lovely place to work now look at!
Nice to see the map "photos" showing the position of the turntable.
In the late fifties early sixties we used to walk up past the shed and a pathway took you down behind the shed and over the railway bridge shown on the "photo.
There was always a few locos to "spot" on or off the turntable.
We would then carry on along the path on our way to St Phillips Marsh shed.
I can clearly remember the turntable being there well into the diesel age long after the building of the diesel shed.

Yes I did stand in the middle of the turntable (removed). Apparently it was removed a went to railway preservation society somewhere.
I used to work there when doing TPWS for railtrack.
Excellent photos Mike, It doesnt look like from where you were standing there was any outline of the circle, apart from you knowing it used to be there was there any markings that you could see or was it covered in gravel at that time?
Hi All
when I was a fireman I lived in york rd along the new cut
and was in the shed link at spm and used to walk along the track over the bridge from bath rd
