Midland Railway bridges between Bath & Bristol

Post by madhattie »

Does anyone have a list of official Midland Railway bridge numbers for the bridges on the Bath - Mangotsfield section of line? I'm currently working on this section of the new version of the website and am having difficulty with it because the railway crosses the River Avon so many times!

Check yer books, ask yer mates etc please!!

I'd love to be on my bike right now! Instead I'm stuck inside working at 900mph!

Do the bridges actually have the numbers painted/cast on them then?

I reckon it's bridge 44 at Green park, 40 at the gasworks, 35 at Newbridge and um, that's it!

Originally they had cast iron numbers on them, if memory serves.

I doubt any do now though.

The bridge carrying the A4 over the railway path at Newbridge has "179 40" painted on it, if that means anything...

Cheers Gary. I have a feeling that's the mileage from Derby. (not sure though!)

Was in Bath today taking photos in and around the Homebase car park and got quite a few photos of what remains of the railway. Not as many as I'd like, I never have enough time! I also took some of Weston (Bath) and surrounding area, but forgot to take any of Locksbrook Road (between bridge 40 and Weston) which is annoying!

The area between Green Park and the gas works is huge and currently derelict. Housing is about to go up. If anyone wants to get final photos of this area it's now or never time!

Hello,

The LMS bridge over the GW lines at Lawrence Hill was Bridge 6, if that helps. I used to have the broken remains of one of the plates...

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.
