Going back to the first link, i suddenly noticed that lightening the photo shows the door to the gents (thanks for the info Robin, I can clearly now see in the areial photo where they were. Is the ornamental wall on the line of the rear of the gents?)
Its hard to tell on the ground. There are no signs of any external footings - it appears that the walls were removed to below ground level and then partially landscaped. The indentations in the ground where the platform tarmac ends seems to support this - the soil infill has compacted over the years.

That said, when the new wall was built then logic would suggest that they would have to lay new foundations, or reuse existing ones, so the strong possibility is that at least the northern wall has been built on the line of the original dividing wall.

All of which is a long way of saying "I think so but I don't know so!"

Incidentally, Duncan and Horace, I took some photographs of the floor tiling yesterday, with the new ornamental wall also showing to more easily pinpoint the locations of the various patterns.

As I've never found the need to join flickr, if one or both of you could PM me I'll send them to you and you can do with them what you will!

PS - I see this thread has now extended to Flickr

Robin let Duncan post the pics if he wants as they are probably more relevant to his flickr site than mine.
The Bristol railway archive and flickr go hand in hand for me. One led to the other and believe it or not it was Mangotsfield that started them both for me.

They should be going on this web site as well

Post by Blandford1969 »

Hi both,

Thanks for the additional information. Hopefully they will be appearing on this site soon. I have e mailed them through for inclusion, sadly they are the only ones I have at the moment.

I will be honest I added them on flickr to see if I can get hold of a better resolution on that emmdee has which would be very useful for drawing from. By posting them at various places as well hopefully increases the chances of getting to someone else who might remember something. I have also made a post on RM web and will follow with one on the LMS e mail group.

am I right that this line of columns runs between the middle of the two platforms at the back of the passageway? http://bristol-rail.co.uk/wiki/File:Mangotsfield16.jpg

If it is then I can be definatley sure about the roof of the passageway, having also found some evidence on Emmdees and my slides showing a raised end over the passagewat and what looks like the roof line of a classic Midland glass passageway supported on one side by a wall and the other by columns. I am presuming there was a fence behind it?

Robin, your comments are very useful, I've found that doing architectrual history you end up making lots of assumptions. When I was doing Blandford there were no photos of the main building on the platform side or the rear of the goods shed as examples. Based on verbal conversations and other S&D features I drew the plans, when about 4 years later photos were found they showed the features to be correct.

Seeing your photos Robin would be excellent as from all the posts on here starting to put the details of the station together. Look forward to seeing your other shots as well Horace.

I don't know about anyone else, but it really seams like this is moving on at a pace that you could never have expected.

Kind regards

Duncan

I have decided that for sake of our finger tips to stop us searching high and low i will start a group on Flickr for Mangotsfield Station, lets see how much we get. I am also hoping that by doing this this Hattie may be able to get his hands on more photographs that with his powers of persuasion he may be able to get added to this site as well.

great

Post by Blandford1969 »

Great idea, I'm in for that, but it should not stop the useful discussion taking place here in relation to layout of the buildings etc.

Horace, it was very useful to find out that the windbreak was built of sleepers and your memory of the doors to the booking hall being double leaf solid door.

Will sort out my phots for the Mangotsfield station area now.

more feelers put out

Post by Blandford1969 »

I have now posted on the LMS e mail group and RM web as well and will follow with the SDJR groups later.

I have also e mailed the LMS society and will be doing the same with the Midland Society.

Hopefully one of these avenues might turn up some more information. I also hope to visit the site on the 10th of August on my way to Southampton to take some measurements.

Just found this nice one of a warship entering the station from Bath http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2088/175 ... 44ab_b.jpg

Kind regards

If it will be of any help, I could make myself available on the 10th. It always helps to have somebody on the other end of the tape

Duncan has sent me photos for the site which hopefully I'll put up tomorrow. Would have done it today but ended up in Thornbury buying a new car (the ever expanding family!) and sorting out insurance etc. Plus, I'm plastering the spare room in readiness for the baby moving out of my bedroom (then i may finally get some sleep!)

I've been kind of inert on the website of late, but I'm just so permanently knackered :(

Robin,

That would be most appreciated, your right how much easier it is with someone helping. I will drop you a line when I have a better idea of time, I would expect it to be early / mid afternoon, as I've still got to go onto Southampton afterwards.

Well so far my appeals via other web groups has resulted in one person replying saying they thought the Station Masters house was between Carson Road and the station and that the said building looked very railway like.

The other suggestion was the Kidderminster Railway museum. I was already going to be spending a day identifying photos for the museum in August, so will aks what is available in relation to Mangotsfield at the same time.

Midland Record 12 has a shot of the Bath platforms in which can just be seen the passageway and the doors and windows on that side.

On a separate note, i will send some other photos for the site that might be interesting, I've just got to find them.

Kind regards

That shot is lovely - you can feel the cold! I also remember feeling the cold as when I used to be a pupil at Rodway School we used to run Cross Country often along that very stretch of track (along with the stretch towards North Junction...

Pete, please tell me what sleep is, i have forgotten, is not that time when it is dark and there is a smell of dirty nappies, the sound of a hungry mouth on a boob and especially the time when you get an elbow in the side and are told change the baby!!

Sleep what a wonderful concept, what a wonderful dream, oh my how i dream of it.

Why is it babies also bring about a need for decorating, especially when one is tired, i am walking around with a dirty nappy in one hand a paintbrush in the other and doing things like this in coffee breaks!!

Best of luck in your journey through parenthood, knackering as it is i must admit it does have some attractions, well so i am told!!
