Thornbury to Stonehouse - Journey time

Post by yowie »

Hi,

Can anyone please, stitch together the timetables of old to tell me what the journey time was from Thornbury to Stonehouse/Stroud. I know that Thornbury to Yate took 22 minutes, typically for a stopper.

Perhaps consider that the Thornbury branch line was open to passenger traffic around 1872 to c. 1944, so if anyone could supply timings and connections (via Cheltenham?) to match with that time period...

I just realised that the full journey time would include the waiting times too- if anyone can be that smart you're a better chap than me.
I would be most grateful for this information.

Cheers,
Howard.

From Bradshaw April 1910

Thornbury dep 8.17 arrive Yate 8.34
Yate depart 9.39 arrive Stonehouse (Eastington Road) 10.27
Stonehouse depart 11.01 arrive Stroud Cheapside 11.24
or if you don't mind a short walk
Stonehouse depart 10.37 arrive Dudbridge 10.44

all on the Midland, no need to go as far as Cheltenham or Gloucester

So 2hrs 27 minutes for a direct journey by road of about 18 miles.

It would have been quicker to go by bike :)

Thanks for the help :)

Today, one could take a bus to Yate, train to Gloucester and train to Stonehouse, which takes 2h 11m
or,
A bus to Gloucester and another bus to Stonehouse, which takes 1h 42m

Progress? Hmm.

Or, averaging 10mph on a bike (which is about all I could manage these days ( :) ), 18 miles would take 1h 48m. The same as in 1910!

The LMS timetable for May to July 1939 quotes the following times;
Thornbury dep 7.48
Bristol T. M. Arr 8.51
Bristol T. M. Dep 9.05
Stroud Arr. 10.09

All other departures had no connections at Yate without long waits of 45minutes plus.
