Locomotives used on the Sharpness Dock Railway

Does anyone have any information on the industrial locomotives used at Sharpness Docks .

In 1996 there was at least still one industrial diesel in store there which was moved out of the old engine shed when the building was leased to a recycling firm. It may have been a Ruston . Does anyone have details or know if it was preserved or scrapped ?

In steam days there were at least two engines based there , they may have been Pecketts or Avonsides - again any information on what they were and what became of them ?

My information is taken from the guide books published by the Industrial Railway Society. The "by" dates are publication dates of the various guide books.

The two locos listed here in 1979 were:
DL1 4wDM RH 463150 1961

DL2 0-6-0DM WB 3151 1962

RH= Ruston & Hornsby WB= W.G. Bagnall

By Jan 1987 they were shown to carry the additional numbers 01001 and 01002
By Jan 1991 DL2 was out of use.
By Jan 1996 rail traffic was reported as ceased and both locos listed as out of use.
By Jan 2000 DL1 was the only loco showing as present on site.
By Mar 2003 the site had been deleted from the guide book.


DL2 was preserved at the Appleby Frodingham RPS, Scunthorpe by Jan 2000 and still reported there by Jan 2006.

The dock loco looks like an Avonside to me, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable could say for sure.

Thank you Blackthorn that is an interesting site . I have found a reference to a locomotive being aquired by the Sharpness Company from the GWR in 1883 . This was one of the Sharp Stewart 0-6-0 's that had been absorbed from the Cornish Mineral Railway (GWR 1398) which was scrappped in 1924 . I dont know a lot about early GWR saddletanks but I think the photo on the site may show this engine .

Certainly the picture has similarities to the GWR 1361 Class which was the GWR version of this type of engine.

Thank you for that information - its interesting that the IRS were showing locomotives still present up until 2000 as I certainly do not remember seeing them after the summer of 1996 . In fact there was nothing of rolling stock interest left after that date as the sole remaining mineral wagon that was near the entrance lock also disapeared about then as did the remains of the six wheeled carriage that was over by the site of the "pleasure grounds" and in use as a private garage . This was demolished when the cottage there was also knocked down . The carriage was too far gone to tell what it had been in railway use but may have been a Midland design or possibly a Severn & Wye vehicle.
Despite the lack of stock and some reduction in sidings most of the original track layout of the internal system was still in place at that time.

On the reverse of the original picture shown on our website at Forest Prints, the following is written.

"1873 - Cornwall Minerals Railway No 7 -> GWR 1877. Sold to Sharpness Docks Co 1883 (No 2) Scrapped 1924."
