Severn Tunnel: 'A Hole'

Post by APW »

"Once you get through it from England into Wales, speed must be reduced, the signalling system is worse and the track is abysmal."

"The unions told the meeting that if a Severn barrage was built, then they would like a new rail link and one that was above water."

Hmm. I don't claim to be an expert but wouldn't running into a station at 60 mph require a fairly brisk stop...? Would have thought 20 - 30 was nearer the mark but I'm sure there's someone out there who can put me right. Don't so-called "union officials" make themselves look a bit silly when they give quotes like that to the press?

Perhaps it's just me but I don't think calling Severn Tunnel "The Hole" is particularly derogatory? :? Quite a strange news report really.

As far as i am aware the tunnel has always been known as the hole by train crews even in the days of steam. I think the guy needs to get his brain reinvigorated, and remind himself that the days of Joe Stalin are well truly gone. Still i suppose if he wants to run into stations at 60mph then please let him do it on his own with nobody else around, then he will find out for himself what idiotic ideas he has.

Perhaps he had a longer station platform in mind... I guess it might be possible at Temple Meads Platforms 3/4 (if the linespeed allowed).
