Charfield crash 1928

Post by chippy »

There is an interesting piece in the western daily press today (sat 6th.) about the charfield rail crash in 1928,where 15 people were killed.

It's to long to relate here, but there were 2 dead listed as unknown, but legend has built up about who they were.......?

Chippy.

Two children I believe - who are buried in Charfield churchyard.

They went through all the ticket sales and worked out there were two extra bodies on the train. It was an horrific three train accident, with wreckage piled up under the bridge and thrown over the top of the road.

The whole lot burst into flames and the accident led to the end of gas lighting on Midland stock (so I've heard).

Caused apparently by signalling irregularities and wrong decisions made regarding traffic flow ...

google the crash under glourcesterhire schools sites there are some photos i have not seen before.
As jules mentioned some irregularites reagrding signalling it was foggy and no fog warning for the distants were given, The outer home and distants were on, but the driver and fireman insisted that they had both seen the green aspect at the outer home siganals.
