This is the original forum of the Bristol Railway Archive that existed between 2003 and 2013. I finally rescued it after it seemed unrecoverable after a large crash. I have made it available for viewing. It is locked, all posts to the new version please!
You can purchase a Fuji S5500 for ú199.74 (ú164.99+VAT+P&P) at www.ebuyer.com. Just go to the web site and enter Fuji S5500 in the search box.
I have not purchased items from ebuyer myself, but I know people who have and they are happy with the service.
Alternatively, you can get it from Freemans for ú299.99.

I want to learn how to use it properly though, know any good beginners' courses in digital photography?
Proper college courses I mean, not online guides...I wanna do it properly
Good camera! I spent an afternoon at FAW once with someone who had one of them and who -insisted- on showing me every photo he took with the thing! (kinda put me off them!)
For courses, best place to start would be the local college. Try the library for info on what's available.
Of course one of the best things about digital is you can take 8 million pics trying out all the settings and chuck them all away afterwards at no cost. Best way to learn if you ask me....
There's not a lot to learn really. Rule of third, interesting foreground and background. When to deliberately blur etc. Shutter over aperature and vice vera.
Actually, if you go to the library take out a few books, you'll learn a lot that way and it'll cost you nowt.

Hmmm I can only find it on Ebuyer at ú226.97 inc VAT
No idea about any of these particular online shops, but you may want to consider buying your camera from a shop in the High Street, if they have a price matching scheme; most of them do. This has the following advantages:
1. You get the goods the same day, for the same price as say Amazon.
2. Generally speaking at least one of the staff have a reasonably good idea of the quality of the camera and its capabilities.
3. The shop is obliged to sort out any problems with the equipment that may occur. Both of my cameras have to go back to Canon for a service this month, which the shop are going to sort out - this would cost a small fortune to co-ordinate by yourself (postage, 'phone calls etc).
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Andrew
P.S.: When you get around to buying it, post some pictures of the new bridge at Silk Mills!!
Hmm, do you know which shops do web price-matching? Jessops does, but I've found them to be pretty useless generally, so if I can avoid them I will.
Edit: Empire Direct say they will match the price AND deduct another 20%, so as Dixons have beaten their price on the s5500, I'd be able to get it for ú175.99...nice!
I wonder if Jessops will price match a price match
Edit2: Whoops, it's deduct 20% of the DIFFERENCE so with their stupid shipping charges is still cheaper at Amazon haha
I'll see if I can get Jessops to price match the ú199

I asked Jessops if they'd price-match but the lowest they'll go is ú211.99. I'd rather buy from a high street retailer but when the difference is ú9...hmm
I've entered the url in Amazon's 'have you found this cheaper anywhere else' part of their website. Might be worth checking them in a few days to see if they've matched the price.

(provided you don't mind using Amazon that is!)
Dunno...they're all internet shops! Amazon is "bigger" I suppose, but that doesn't always mean better
My experiences with Amazon have always been very good, and sometimes exceptional.
Shortly before Christmas my sister placed an order with Amazon, but the estimated delivery date specified in the order confirmation email was much later than we were expecting. When we contacted Amazon to query the matter, they apologised for getting it wrong and upgraded the free 3-5 day delivery to 1st class next day - free of charge and without being asked!
Perhaps you could email komplett and ask if it's still available.
The cheapest I can now find the S5500 for from an online shop that has good reviews and appears to actually have some for sale, is ú214.95 at www.cameras2u.com . Whilst you are there you can pick up a 256MB Fuji xD Picture Card for just ú28.00 û a bargin.
That's my favorite line - 'free with a packet of cornflakes'.
Early last week a friend of mine asked me to guess how much his new 160GB ATA100 7200RPM 2MB hard drive cost him. I replied 'Did you actually buy it or was it free with a packet of cornflakes?'.
A few days later my brother-in-law asked me how much a DVD-RW costs. I told him 'ú35-ú55, but if you leave it a couple of months they'll be free with a packet of cornflakes'.
IT: if the price hasn't gone down then the technology has gone up.
