Probably taken from Gas House Crossing. We regularly get calls from drivers saying there are photographers standing on the line there when there is a special about!James wrote:A very powerful low-angled shot...I hope that's a telephoto effect and you weren't standing in the four foot of the goods loop!Rich_Eason wrote:Yatton Sunday 13th July![]()

Thanks James and mow, I wondered what is was doing at BTM, Tangmere and Bittern in one day, impressive.mow wrote:Tangmere has been based at Southall, although it has also been up at Carnforth.
It will be running back to Bristol tonight, The UK Steam site hasn't any posted times for the Light Engine Move on its way back to Southall.
Does anyone know who owns this engine?

Certainly don't recall seeing anyone being silly that morning? No one was wandering on the line, no one stood in front of it? In fact the nearest person was the guy hanging over the fence on the opposite side of where I was stood...
Heres the thing if you want to carry on enjoying this forum how about you get out with your camera and take some images and contributing? I'm buggered if I'm sharing anymore if thats your attitude.

Sorry Rich, it wasn't intended to sound sarcastic. I never suggested that you were doing anything silly on the crossing, I just stated that it's a location where we regularly get drivers complaining. Perhaps if each sentance was in a seperate paragraph it would have been clearer?Rich_Eason wrote:Yeah, yeah sarcastic point noted...![]()

Michael,
I love the pictures you have on fotopic, but as a amateur photographer i would love to be able to see some technicalities about them.
Now maybe that is why you use to fotpic to stop people like me seeing your secrets. But i am sure Hattie would love to see the same info as well.
A few secrets please.

Horace, to be honest, I'm still trying to work out the best way of using the camera. I thought it was worth trying to place it on a tripod, and experimenting, mainly because I haven't seen many night shots of The Torbay Express at Temple Meads. Most of the shots were via trial and error. It was a real trial, with many errors.
Technical secret no 1 always check the auto focus settings, particularly if the camera has been cleaned. I really made a mess of my attempts to photograph the Duchess at Sapperton, a good opportunity wasted.

From the odd bits of night shots I've tried a tripod (although not always favoured by station staff) is essential. Second, use of a remote or timer to prevent any shake.
Also I think there is a bit of trial and error as station/yard lighting is different colours at different locations about the area and will give different effects on the final image.
This pic demonstrates the different colours and influence of the lamps at St Andrews Road to try and explain

Some cameras have long exposure noise correction, this is always helpful for long exposures.
If using AF some cameras may struggle to find focus in low light but you can usually get a lock after some trying.
"Bracketting" your exposures I find is a way of coming away with shots of which at least some will be of use... Always shoot in RAW as it gives you a chance to rescue those shots that are good but didn't come out "right".
I think its one of those things to get out and not be disappointed with your results and keep at it.
