Are you absolutely sure about this? Are you sure you didn't dream this?(no offence). When abouts was this?

Whilst I agree with some people who say that Adelente's on Cardiff-Portsmouth's would be a better replacement than the overcrowded 2-car 158's, I'd be very surprised if FGW have actually at any time over the past 14 months yet ran the Adelente's on Cardiff-Portsmouth's.

We see a lot of Adelantes on Paddington - Oxford/Great Malvern/Worcester FS/Hereford services. I think the bulk of the Oxford - Paddington fast services are booked for Adelantes, and certainly the majority of trains over the Cotswold line are now booked for Adelante or HST units rather than the Thames Turbos (although Turbos do still turn up frequently: you should see the chaos on platform 1 at Oxford when an up Cotswold service calls with a 3-car 166 vice 5-car 180!). This is probably why you don't see them so much in the Bristol area these days.

I was chatting to one of the old sweats at Temple Meads last year and he thought they were hilarious. The under-powering is true. He said they built a load of commuter trains and tarted them up ( and ran them ) as inter-city expresses. They had the life spans of mayflies.
Shame really, I quite liked them ( as a passenger).
