Severn Rail Bridge

Post by James »

Ok this is really stretching the "Bristol" subject matter of this site, but I've always been interested in the old Severn rail bridge...you know the one, it no longer exixts :\

It was built in competition with the Severn tunnel by a different railway company, and opened in 1879 (years before the tunnel), but was seriously damaged in 1960 when struck by two barges. Two of the girder spans fell into the river, and the bridge was abandoned, although it wasn't demolished until 1969.

It included a swing bridge over the canal at the Sharpness end and a brick arched viaduct at the Lydney end, with what looks like 17-18 arched spans, and two larger ones over the shipping channel. At the Lydney end, a line branched off to the west of the mainline before curving east and presumably crossing the mainline on the brick viaduct before reaching the girder section of the bridge. This line is now dismantled, although according to the OS maps, the branch line leading to Sharpness docks on the other side is intact, with only the southern half of the triangular junction with the mainline, and the final tight curve leading to the bridge through a deep cutting beyond the docks dismantled.

From the (blurry) aerial photos on multimap.com what looks like several shadows can be seen at the Sharpness end, and a lighter rectangle of ground standing out from the green...perhaps surviving remnants of the bridge supports and abutment? It must have been one hell of an impressive structure, both to view from below and to travel across...what a shame it was never rebuilt. :(

Anyway, if you feel like an adventure...

p.s. here's some pictures:

It's something I've seen in books many times and wished I could have seen it in the flesh. I like Sharpness, it's a great place to walk around if you're into old railways/industry, but I think the place could take up an entire new website  :D

I feel a Sharpness page coming on :)

The abutment on the riverbank. It's really imposing and the whole bridge must have been fantastic to see when it was in one piece.

Back in Sharpness and this is the High Level and Low Level swing bridges, both of which carried railways.

I got a few more pics, but it was extremely hot and there was no shade for my two little 'uns to shelter in so I didn't get as many as I would have liked.

There is a superbly detailed article on the bridge in the latest "Semaphore" (Avon Valley Railway magazine), and the most interesting point is that when the bridge was dismantled in 1967, by the Nordman Construction Co. (Gloucester), the spans were "used to form a road bridge in Chile"!

Now this is just crying out for a follow-up! Does anyone know where this bridge is exactly? I would love to see pictures!

Don't forget this footage of the demolition (you'll need QuickTime to watch it, but it is free - www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html):
