People using the Bristol to Bath Railway Path have been given a special Christmas present. As they ride or walk past they can admire the growing community garden created by retired minibus driver Dave Souch, of Greenbank, with a bit of help from wife Rita and friendly neighbour Dennis Western
Dave is also the local Neighbourhood Watch coordinator and, following muggings and other incidents in the Devon Road bridge area, he started thinking how the space could be opened up and made more attractive.
The first step was to get rid of a fence and wall which gave cover to possible criminals. Three years later the garden he has built is the local talking point.
Dave, aged 69, said: "I wanted to give something back to the community."
The Bristol to Bath path is the busiest section of the national cycle network and the first to be built by Bristol transport charity Sustrans more than 20 years ago.
Bristol Sustrans manager Neil Stacey said: "It is fantastic that Dave has used his free time to really make this part of the Bristol to Bath Railway Path a community asset."
