Teewell Hill

Post by BristleGWR »

I've been meaning to take of photo of this for ages, it's not the best quality photo I'm afraid, as it was taken on my phone and getting dark at the time.

This structure appeared on the Bristol to Bath Railway path at Teewell Hill about this time last year and is another example of how the track is being protected!!

Incidently shortly after this was built the electrical cabinets seen on the Teewell Hill page were removed.

possible siphon chamber

Post by horace »

I can see this requires a visit and a little inspection. Using my knowledge of the area can I suggest that they have had to build a new chamber on the siphon for the water course that goes under the railway at this point. The watercourse is the stream that runs from Soundwell, through here, around the side of Charnhill and then goes under the railway again at the bridge road railway bridge, eventually joining Warmley brook at the back of what was the Brains Faggot factory. The stream formed part of the old boundary between Mangotsfield UDC and Kingswood UDC and can be seen on the old maps.

I suggest you question the local planning authority (LPA) in the new year.

This is clearly 'development' and, therefore, requires consent. It is possibly what is known as 'permitted development', i.e., the structure does not require specific planning permission, which would probably be the case if, as suggested, it was necessarily erected by the water company or some other statutory body.

Nevertheless, should the 'lawfullness' of a development be questioned, the LPA has the wherewithall (and duty) to investigate and respond - which they will - and/or take enforcement action should there be a breach of planning control - which they will not unless the rogue structure happens to upset a councillor on the planning committee or some other worthy, but that's another story.

Seasons greetings
