I remember the days when one could just walk to the end of platforms 1 and 3, and watch the trains whilst having lunch. Not anymore.

How does one gain access to the platforms of Bristol Temple Meads, without resorting to purchasing a ticket?

Not what you're after I daresay, but during engineering possesions, when replacement bus services are running, it's possible to get on the bus at (say) Filton Abbey Wood, which is free, get off the bus at TM and walk through the tunnel that they open specifically to receive bus passengers.APW wrote:How does one gain access to the platforms of Bristol Temple Meads, without resorting to purchasing a ticket?:
Normally though, the easiest way onto the platforms involves buying a return to Lawrence Hill for 90p.
It's all very sad, especially as my own recent travel experiences suggest that all the guards are really on the ball when it comes to inspecting tickets on the trains anyway.APW wrote:I remember the days when one could just walk to the end of platforms 1 and 3, and watch the trains whilst having lunch. You have to pay to travel from Exeter St Davids to Exeter Central now...TheTrainline says it's a 3 minute journey but I'm sure it's less
60p single or 80p return!
Although it's the same price for a Taunton - St Davids Cheap Day Return as a Taunton - Central
I could cycle to Temple Meads, buy a one-way ticket from Lawrence Hill to Temple Meads, walk to Lawrence Hill (leaving my bike at Temple Meads), get on a train and travel to Temple Meads, get off the train, do a bit of train spotting, leave, and finally cycle home.
If the ticket guards at the exit question why it has taken me so long to leave the station, perhaps I could tell them I got lost.
It might be easier to become a train driver.

Judging by the number of people who don't have tickets on services departing from Temple Meads there does seem to be a way.APW wrote:How does one gain access to the platforms of Bristol Temple Meads, without resorting to purchasing a ticket?
I still do when the weather's good. Us season ticket holders have no problems. Unlimited access to Temple Meads with free travel to your home station thrown in too. The trouble is after you've made the effort to get to Temple Meads there's often very little to see.APW wrote:I remember the days when one could just walk to the end of platforms 1 and 3, and watch the trains whilst having lunch.
