Barrow Road

Post by MikeMatt »

I'm currently researching my family tree and have recently found out that my grandfather Herbert Edgar Williams worked as a coal wagon loader at the LMS coal yard on Barrow Road. I would be grateful for any info and or pictures of this yard, and I'd also like to know where it was in relation to the modern Barrow Road. Also, is it likely that he would've belonged to a union?

I can't tell you anything about Barrow Road, it's before my time (honest!).
I can tell you, however, that until Tory legislation in the late 80's, every railway employee was obliged to join a recognised trade union as the railway was a "Closed Shop" in union terms.
I was offered the post of "Trainee Guard" in 1980, subject to passing a medical and joining a union. I passed the medical and joined the union.
Twenty five years on and now working for Virgin Trains, I often wonder if I did the right thing :-).
There are three recognised unions in the railway industry: ASLEF for the drivers, TSSA for the office pen-pushers and the RMT for everyone else.
The RMT (Rail and Maritime) came about by the merger of the National Union of Railwaymen and the Maritime Union.
To answer your question, yes, the person of whom you relate would certainly have been a member of the National Union of Railwaymen.
HTH,
Andy
