Perceptive article by Simon Jenkins about the folly of privatisation in today's Grauniad here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... 29,00.html
followed by a great stream of readers' comments of varying degrees of ranting!

The trouble is that the ranting is justified!
The saga of the wrecking of our railways is a sad one. Just as British Rail were getting it right, in came this buffoon Major with his cronies to wreck it. Their mates in the City - grossly overpaid bankers and lawyers etc - did nicely out of it. People in the rail industry who happened to be in the right place at the right time did very nicely from buying assets cheaply and flogging them again to make instant multi million pound fortunes. Typically Conman Blair and his set of cronies did nothing effectual about it. Any serious government would have said 'right, the party's over - renationalisation without compensation'.
No wonder that British politicians and business leaders are regarded with contempt. I'd certainly keep a close eye on my silver and anything else with those corrupt idiots around.

Too right - VFM is very much missing from Britain's railways now.
If the goverment money that has been misapporopriated to shareholders since privatisation had all been ploughed back into the network, then we really would have as the article says "a gold plated service."
Oh well - I can dream...
We aren't that far from renationalisation now surely - with GNER up for sale and the SWT franchise up for renewal how long before First group own the entire network..
