I Killed My Computer!

Post by madhattie »

Message as per subject!

I had a horrendous day today when my main 'puter decided it no longer wanted to process images and create webpages and decided to commit suicide right in the middle of an update!

Restarting the computer gave me the blue screen of death and a message saying something about my sysroot being corrupted. Running chdisk from a C prompt (when I finally got it to boot to a C prompt!) told me that the harddrive was corrupted.

I tried using the repair function on the Windows CD. Didn't work. Tried doing a reinstallation of XP. Didn't work. In final desperation to get back online (I'm an internet junkie) I formatted the harddrive and tried a fresh install. Guess what? Didn't work!

Anyway, the end result is one knackered 'puter and I shall be off hunting for a decently priced harddrive tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I've lost a lot of pics. I have my own all backed up on CD, but I don't have backups of pics that have been sent to me unless they've come via CD rather than email. And although I have my own pics backed up, I don't have them backed up in the same structure as they were on my harddrive, ie. Done and To Do!

So basically, I shall be offline tomorrow. (keep an eye on the forums please Andrew and James!) and it'll likely be a while before I get back up to speed and do any more website updates, I have quite a bit of lost 9-5 stuff to catch up on first.

Ho hum, this'll teach me not to do more frequent back ups on my work 'puter...

pictorial losses

Post by horace »

A wonderful feeling having your hard drive go T*ts up!!
Have had it happen myself.
I can resend you all of the pictures you have had from me, even here in India i have them backed up onto a DVD, ha ha.
Can i suggest you get a DVD writer and back up your hard drive onto a couple of discs, along with the complete structure, including your mail boxes.

Or if you want to wait to Mid september i will send you all of mine on a CD so that you dont lose them again.

Hi Clive. I've been pestering the boss (ie. my brother) for a DVD burner for ages. Have warned on many occassions about how much downtime a hard drive crash would create on these machines because of their intensive use. Never thought it would happen though...

I did actually back up my computer onto a seperate hard drive within the machine, but although I'm using exactly the same software with exactly the same settings as before, the new install won't recognice the old hard drive! Anyway, all is working at the mo, and I'm currently transferring 13gigs worth of photos from CDs back to my harddrive :P (a rather boring job!)

I think I'd rather wait for a CD in the post if that's okay with you. Ironically, I was looking at the pics you sent me of the cement works at Avon Street the day before the crash and burned those particular ones onto a CD so I would know exactly where they were when I needed them! God job too!
