Spaceship on the M5
This afternoon I passed 92203 Black Prince travelling south on the M5. Came off at J25 and headed through Taunton presumably destined for the WSR. No sign of the tender.
Where did the name spaceship come from? I never heard it when I was a teenager.

David added the name Black Prince to his locomotive when he became the new owner.mow wrote:It was added by its owner the artist David Sheppard.
''The 9F was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. The class earned a nickname of 'Spaceships', due to its size and shape.''
Photographs (c/o Steven Edge) of the loco and tender after arrival at the WSR. <BJ>

Hmmm ... The S&D themed weekend.....free2grice wrote: 73129 and 70000 'Britannia' are no longer able to appear at the gala but GWR 4936 and Ivatt 43106 have been added to the visitor list. <BJ>
Old "roster":
70000 - not a problem - you didn't see many of them at Green Park and none south of Bath Junction
73129 - A Caprotti valve gear fitted engine - usually considered to be worth one coach less than a Walschaerts version
New roster
4936 - wrong railway chum
43106 - don't expect much praise from S&D men

Not sure I can match Ian's splendid efforts.
