Spaceship on the M5

Post by the green mile »

This afternoon I passed 92203 Black Prince travelling south on the M5. Came off at J25 and headed through Taunton presumably destined for the WSR. No sign of the tender.

Where did the name spaceship come from? I never heard it when I was a teenager.

David added the name Black Prince to his locomotive when he became the new owner.

''The 9F was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. The class earned a nickname of 'Spaceships', due to its size and shape.''

Photographs (c/o Steven Edge) of the loco and tender after arrival at the WSR. <BJ>

Autumn Steam Gala on the WSR, 4th to 7th October will feature 9F 92203, 5MT 73129 and Black 5 45379, 7F No 88. This is to mark the 50th Anniversary of the last "Pines Express" over the S & D.J.R.
I too had not heard of the term "Spaceships" for 9F's. I thought "Spaceships" were Bristol "LS" Buses :)

73129 and 70000 'Britannia' are no longer able to appear at the gala but GWR 4936 and Ivatt 43106 have been added to the visitor list. <BJ>

Hmmm ... The S&D themed weekend.....

Old "roster":
70000 - not a problem - you didn't see many of them at Green Park and none south of Bath Junction
73129 - A Caprotti valve gear fitted engine - usually considered to be worth one coach less than a Walschaerts version

New roster
4936 - wrong railway chum
43106 - don't expect much praise from S&D men ;)

Also the S&D 7F is still in blue. This would have been an ideal time to paint it black. <BJ>

Took these near the west end of the runway at Filton.
