Possible loco for this Sunday's Torbay Express:

''4464 Bittern in steam at Didcot Railway Centre. Loco to work to Barton Hill later today'' (Thursday, 16/08/2012). <BJ>

Bittern just went past here (Ashley Hill) in direction of Barton Hill, just one carriage and cruising gently (no steam).

And "something" just went by in the opposite direction with plenty of steam on display (up hill, of course) but the steam is all I did see!

Bittern *was* the loco for the Torbay Express on Sunday and here's my video of the occasion, mostly shot at Dawlish.

http://youtu.be/CJdxTMtrx90

Its return via Dawlish seemed much slower than that by some of its predecessors on that route and according to a chap in the know at Paignton, it had stalled twice at Churston on the way to Kingswear and had to be rescued - not sure by what engine. He said it was a combination of wet tracks, big wheels and a heavy load.

The A4 sliipped climbing to Churston and initially Type 2 D7535 was sent to bank the train but that was unsuccessful. Further help came from 7827 Lydham Manor.

This had been reported on Locoscene by a passenger on the service.

We travelled on the Torbay Express yesterday, so were on the train when it stalled on the climb to Churston.

As it was known the rails were wet, we were banked by a Class 25 diesel all the way up from Paignton. However, even that was not enough. we set back and had a second try, but stalled again. Finally Lydham Manor was brought up to the rear and we made it over the summit.

Here's some footage of last Sunday's trip. Note my obvious difficulty of holding the camera level when zooming - giving the impression of gradients where none exist!

Excellent set of photos. From which I can only conclude that I was standing just a few yards further up the platform, filming the departure!

Thanks Geoffers, I ended up standing in front of the warning sign. There was someone with a tripod and video camera on my left.

Ah yes, I must have seen you because I saw the man with the tripod. I was a little further up, standing next to two youngsters who are often at these locations. Somebody came and stood right in front of them, was asked to move, and then stood in front of me!
