"Hall" class on local passenger Bristol to Bath Gr

Post by Pines Alan »

I am prompted to start this new thread as a result of the reminder about a "Scot" on a stopper in the "Jubilees south of Mangotsfield" topic.
One evening my spotters train home (the same 5.06 or 5.10 pm from Bristol TM) was very late and eventually left behind a Hall, tender first.
My notes have long since disappeared so I now have no record of the date or the loco. I would guess it was spring/summer/autumn of 1963 as it was daylight. Anyone on this group able to fill in any details?
Many thanks

No dates, unfortunately, just thoughts :)

The 1710 (or so) SX ex-Bristol was something of a special case - this was the train that sometimes saw ex-GWR railcars working to Green Park, and there are photographs in existence of GW passenger tanks in Green Park, once again working this train or its return diagram.

Was it perhaps a SPM turn? Given that Barrow Road had turns to Portishead (in ex-GW territory) perhaps this was a reciprocal arrangement?

If it was a SPM turn then it would make sense to find a Hall on the job if there was a motive power shortage - my limited records from early 1963 show that a 3-car DMU was usually used and, if the booked unit failed, SPM would then be called upon to provide something for the train.

The reason I mention all this is because the ex-GW engines at Barrow Road at the time (2251 class, 5700 class and few other odss and ends) were not normally used on passenger work. Barrow Road had no "Halls" until SPM closed in May 1964, and also ex-GW engines were unlikely to arrive from Gloucester until Barnwood closed and its turns transferred to Horton Road, at about the same time.

From my limited observation of this train in the early 60's -(the passing time coincided with my late afternoon paper round!!!)- it was always a Marsh allocated loco in charge. I sometimes caught this train home in the late 50's and it was usually worked by one of St.Phillips diesel railcars -(W23/24/25 or 28).
On the occasions i saw this train during the summer of '61,82007 appeared to be the regular loco. When it was unavailable, the diagram was covered by a pannier tank, examples noted included 3650/4619 & 4660.
My few sightings of this train in 1962 showed the motive power was normally the same as the previous year -(Standard Class 3's or Pannier tanks). However on Saturday the 7th and 14th of July the train was headed by SPM allocated Halls 6982 and 4922 respectively. Unfortunately Alan the service was running to time on both occasions so i do not think either relates to the trip you are trying to identify.

Tyrwitt and Robin; apologies for delay in thanking you for your replies. Maybe one day someone's notes may see daylight and then I shall know for sure.
