Ghost Platform ?

Probably something from WW1.

Just up from St Andrews Road heading towards Hallen.

Mike Oakley's book on Bristol Railway Stations makes reference to a Chittening Platform in this area. However it quotes this as closing in 1964 and 'no traces can now be found'. The photo in his book and the map link suggests that the photo above is very much a telephoto job overemphasising the curvature.

Nicely laid track! Definitely a case of 'mind the gap between the train and the platform edge'.

I am pretty sure there were two Chittening Platforms. One was operational during WWI, then it closed, then it was re-opened for WWII. Not sure if they were in exactly the same place.

It confirms the two opening and closing dates on this very site:

Ah .. very well remembered there! BTW, while we are on trivia, did you know that Stephanie Flanders, who seems to always be on Radio 4 nowadays doing her economics pieces, is actually THE Mr Flanders daughter (or grand-daughter probably).

Actually she's his daughter. Born in 1968, Michael Flanders died in 1975

And to add some real trivia, born on Monday August 5th 1968. So she just missed the real end of BR steam (ie excluding the Fifteen Guinea Special) by one day

I seem to recall that after Michael Flanders died, his widow wrote a letter to Modern Railways, saying how much Michael had enjoyed and appreciated rail travel.

What I always took to be Chittening Platform was visible along the Henbury line close to Hallen Marsh Junction at least until 1972 when I was there last!
