Bristol Sand dredgers

Post by stopblock »

Non rail topic sorry but there is such a huge amount of Bristol knowledge on here.
I am after some information about sand dredgers in the bristol channel I have been given a name of a boat but the person the name came from isnt ever sure of what he has been told unless its to do with ARSENAL......
Has there ever been a sand dredger in bristol or avonmouth called " CLIFTON" I have done a short search but not found anything that would suggest so.
I've taken on the task of collecting for a shunter that is to retire in the next month but did have a life on the dredgers and then docks railway. Any help is very gratefull.

You might have to try a visit to the Central Library and see if they have the following book. This link will give you more information about it. I do remember a company called Holms Sand and Gravel who traded from Pooles Wharf at Hotwells, but cannot remember the names of any of their vessels. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Century-Sand-Dr ... 1848687915. Good luck

It could be the Port of Bristol Authority Grab hopper Dredger named Clifton which was used for Mud Dredging, this was built by Charles Hill in 1968 1150 tons and worked all over the PBA system.

Holmes Sand & Gravel dredgers towards the end (1960s/70s) were (if memory serves me correctly):

Harry Brown
Sand Diamond
Sand Sapphire
Sand Opal

This may be of interest but it seems Clifton is conspicous by its absence

With a bit more thinking I can add:

Sand Jade
Sand Gem

to the list (I used to live in Hotwells LOL).

I don't know if this is true but somebody many years ago told me that the Harry Brown was sold for scrap early as it had a pig of a DC electrical system. It was meant to go to Ireland but was stolen by the hired in crew en-route, who sailed it to Alexandria and sold it for their own gain. Apparently, it worked for several more years on construction projects, before being finally sunk there just outside the harbour.

That was the Hotwells rumour, in any case ...

Thank you to both of you for finding the information for me as I said the person who mentioned Clifton to me has a memory like a fish unless its football related.

Harry Brown I think was sold to the middle east but not for scrap see this what I have copied from
http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=1433

In Bernard McCalls book 'Coasters of the Severn & Avon' it says Harry Brown was sold to new owners in the Middle East in 1990 & renamed Alwardi 4. Then in 1992 renamed Sabari & since 1995 has worked for Bahrain owners as Salaiti 17.

Quick lookup on a few shipping registers shows Salaiti 17 still registered and operational in Bahrain!

Good old Harry Brown. Let's bring her back to Bristol! :D
