Barrow Road loco and carriage sheds.

Evening everyone,

Does anyone on here have any images of the carriage shed that used to stand at Barrow Road? Also, are there any known images of the northern side of the roundhouse?

No one has responded to your post for info so maybe this may help. Model Railway Journal no. 200 which is the latest one out has an article about Bristol Barrow Road which is being built by a chap who lives in Bristol called Robin Whittle. He is building it in P4 and although unfinished it looks pretty awesome and will be well worth a view when complete. The area covered is from the roundhouse out to the main line but includes the arches of Barrow Road and the Coal and Ash plants and beyond that. Wild Swan who publish MRJ might forward any request to him, he may well have quite a collection of information for the project. The other publication which you might be aware of is the Midland Record No 30 which has an article on the Midland Railway in Bristol. It has lots of wonderfull pictures many of which I had not seen before of Barrow Road, St Philips Station and Goods Station and Avonside wharf which was quite vast. There is only one picture of the north side of the Carriage shed, with not much detail as most of it is obscured by the numerous cattle docks and wagons which were in front of it. The Midland Record is also published by Wild Swan. I hope this helps your research and perhaps I should add I am nothing to do with Wild Swan Publishing other than a grateful reader

According to R A Cooke`s Track Layout Diagrams, the original carriage shed was positioned between the south side of the engine shed and the main line and was relocated to the north side in 1877. (Barrow Rd MPD opened in 1873).

The (2nd) carriage shed was removed late 1952.
I can recall the raised concrete walkways from this shed still being in situ circa 1965.

Those walkways were there a lot later than that - even into the very early 80s there were remains...

After the the MPD closed in 1965, I did not revisit the area until the 1990`s - I was amazed at how things had changed !!

I guess Digby Street and the shops & houses on Barrow Road were swept away in the late '60's/early '70`s - Does anyone know when the engine shed and adjacent gasworks were demolished ?

I believe the shed building was demolished sometime in 1966 but the gasometers did not come down until 1981.
