The Bristolian Language - totally off topic!

Post by Robin Summerhill »

Bristolians, ex-Bristolians and exiled Bristolians might enjoy having a browse around this, that was highlighted recently in a non-railway forum that I contribute to regularly:

http://www.thatbebristle.co.uk/dictionary/index.shtml

If you start by looking at the page footer, then at the dictionary page for the letter "H," you'll get the general idea/ thrust of the site

I've been a fan of that website since I first saw a link to it from the BBC Bristol web page several years back.
It all takes me back to my younger days, listening to Old Pete and Big Eval on Radio Bristol, and, of course the Derek Robinson 'Krek Waiters Peak Bristle' books from the now long-gone Abson Press.

Must not forget old Pat Dalimor who used to be on John Turner show once a fortnight. On about her days out with husband Jim. Used to enjoy some parts of radio Bristol until JT and pat left then Radio Bristol was re organised so that if you dont live in Bristol then you couldnt receive it. :(

I agree, there were many changes to Radio Bristol that I didn't like...
On a slightly similar vein to Pat on the JT show, I used to like listening to the late Walt Pickering - the Sage of Brislington, on the Steve Yabsley saturday morning show :).

Walt Pickering was a real Character I visited his home in Wick Road several times to measure & fit Carpet and he had a collection of all his Radio Bristol
recordings on Casette tapes.
My favourite will always be his recollection of his visit to America and how the
aircraft had been re-fuelled in mid air

He was a lovely chap, and sadly missed. I never actually got to meet him, although my mum did, at Bitton once...

As we're discussing Bristolian language, I have two particular observations:

1. No Bristolian can do anything without first rotating their body. Example: "So I turned round and said to him ....."

2. Bristolians "smooth a cat", whereas everywhere else you "stroke a cat".

I am sure there are many more anomalies :)

Anyone come across "dapped it down" for "put..." ?

And how about wrong personal pronouns - ie "I" for "me" ? I heard at primary school once "Oi, watch it, you nearly had I over then!" Even more extreme, I also heard "That ain't thine, it's Ines!"

How about "Jasper" for wasp, and "bungee" for pencil eraser?

Did the Roger Bennett, mentioned by Andrew and Bristolian, ever work for the Evening Post ? I have a full page article from the paper dated November 15, 1965 about the closure of Barrow Road Shed at the end of that week by Roger Bennett. It has four photos and some interesting quotes from Harry Hancocks, Shed Master, and Edwin Jackson, Mechanical Foreman.
