Nothing to do with trains, but wow!

Post by James »

You wouldn't believe how many helicopters I've just seen! I heard one fly overhead so I looked out and there were 2 Chinooks leading (the huge ones with the twin rotors), followed by 3 troop transports...either Super Stallions or EH-101s, I'm not sure what the Army use now, followed by 3 more Chinooks: one with a truck and trailer hanging underneath, one with a Land Rover and trailer, and one with a very large crate!

They circled around about 3 times and then flew off to the south east. I'm not sure if there was any war-related even going on, but there are three old airfields in that direction: Culmhead, Smeatharpe, and Dunkeswell.

Edit2: Silly me, of course the operational RNAS Yeovilton is to the south-east, and its satellite/training ground is Merryfield airfield: to the east of Taunton. Still, it's unusual to see that many!

They were too far away to get good pics but I took a few...mostly sky but you can make out the helicopters

Edit: Ooo...they just came back, minus trucks
