Picture Staple Hill Tunnel7.jpg

Post by martin bennett »

The picture Staple Hill Tunnel7.jpg on this site shows Staple Hill Tunnel right enough, but the Peak-hauled train is not going towards Bristol. This is the east portal and the train is between Seymour Road (just above the tunnel) and Teewell Hill heading towards Mangotsfield and Gloucester. The semaphore signal is the down intermediate which in effect allowed two trains to occupy the Mangotsfield-Fishponds block section, while the colour light is the Mangotsfield up distant. - Martin Bennett

Staple Hill Tunnel

Post by martin bennett »

Mind you - I could be wrong! In fact I think I am wrong. On reflection I think the picture Staple Hill Tunnel7.jpg is of the western portal looking down across where Staple Hill station was. In that case, the semaphore signal is the up intermediate which allowed two trains to occupy the Fishponds-Mangotsfield block section, and the colour light is the down Fishponds distant, replacing a semaphore distant that used to be a little closer to Fishponds. - Martin

That is my photograph and I can confirm that you are wrong ;)

If you look closely at the botton right hand corner you will see the end of the down platform ramp. The photograph was taken from the tarmaced area (they'd call it a car park these days but nobody used it as one then!) by the main station buildings which were of course at the top of the cutting on the north side of the line.

If the train was heading north you would see a terrace of houses in Railway Terrace between the station and Thicket Avenue. Instead, at the top of the embankment you see the allotments and the footpath that (still) runs up to the junction of Acacia Road and Midland Road.
