Train derail attempt man jailed
A suicidal man who tried to derail a train near Bristol with concrete blocks has been sent to prison for four years.
Brian Gowing, 33, was seen putting the blocks on the main line at Keynsham, where trains travel at 100mph.
Bristol Crown Court heard Gowing, of Newton Road, Cadbury Heath, Bristol, told the police he wanted to kill himself and derail a train.
Judge Julian Lambert told Gowing: "You could have caused multiple loss of life by placing slabs on that track."
Gowing was noticed on the line by passer-by Dean Taylor in January this year.
Prosecutor Robert Davies said: "Mr Taylor was concerned about the man's well-being and went to phone the police.
"By the time he returned, Gowing had moved down the track and was placing heavy lumps of concrete onto the railway lines."
One of the pieces of concrete recovered from the track was 2ft by 1ft and 6ins deep, Mr Davies said.
He said train operators had been warned about the danger by police after Mr Taylor's call.
The court heard he suffered from depression as well as other psychiatric problems and had not been taking his medication.
