New tunnel found in rocks railway

Post by James »

Workers restoring the Clifton Rocks Railway in Bristol have found a hidden tunnel alongside the main route.

The main 500ft tunnel, which runs between Hotwells and Clifton, was only re-opened to the public in 2005. The last tram on the railway ran in 1934.

The charity restoring the tunnel say they noticed an alcove which, after four hours work moving bricks, led them to the new tunnel.

It is not known where the tunnel leads or why it was built.

The network of tunnels at the railway also served to house the BBC in the West during World War II.

Is there a link to that charity? I'd love to go in there.

There is an update on the CHIS website reference this tunnel.

Extract:

..... newly found 50' tunnel under Sion Hill (this leads to the garden of Spring House but is blocked off- it could be an ice house tunnel since it is on a slope). This tunnel attracted a huge amount of interest and we shall be doing some research into its age. There were stables on the site before the railway was built.
