Hi all,

I been driving past ot for years, but never known much about it...
The Tunnel that goes under bridge valley road, im presuming it was a rail tunnel? if so when was it last used and where was the line to and from?
I've seen loads of people going in there some evenings but never known why... whats it all about?
Any ideas?

Cheers
Jim

This may help - http://www.bristol-rail.co.uk/portway.php

Sorry, haven't got time to look up dates, and as I no longer live in Bristol I don't know what the tunnel is currently used for. During the last War they were used as airraid shelters. A search for "Bristol Port Railway and Pier" will throw up something I'm sure, as will referring to the book "Rail Centres-Bristol" by Colin Maggs. (Unfortunately I left my copy behind when on holiday in France!)

it is one of the remainders of the line to hotwells closed. This was the original route through Sea Mills station before the extention via Clifton Down was built. There used to be a junction just east of Sea Mills station It was closed around the time the road was built - not sure where people are going in the evening thou....

It used to be a shooting club but it was closed because everyone used to park on the double yellows and get parking tickets!

i seeeeee... many thanks!
i always wondered what the people were doing there, always was around early evening every few weeks, was wondering as to whether it was some masonic thing or such like, the mind boggles!

you mentioned clifton down, i've tried researching the tunnel, but never found much, when was it built and by who? i see they are doing lots of clearing trees and stuff at the entrance just recently.
