TERROR FEARS HALT RECYCLING BINS MOVE
15:00 - 10 November 2005
Fears over terrorist attacks have halted a plan to move recycling bins to Bruton railway station car park. Wessex Trains, which owns the car park, refused South Somerset District Council permission to move the bins to the site because legislation, bought in after the terrorist attacks in London in July, prohibits open bins to be placed at railway stations.
A Wessex Trains spokesman said: "After the terrorist acts in July there was a blanket requirement to remove all bins from all stations."
The siting of Bruton's recycling facility at Tolbury Mill came into question after the bottle bank was being used at anti-social hours causing residents sleepless nights.
Last month, the town council and residents were asked, by the district council, their opinion to find a new site and the railway station car park was deemed the most suitable.
The proposed move was objected to by residents living near the station who feared that the problems would be transferred on to them.
A district council spokesman said: "In light of the decision by Wessex Trains we will have to assess the situation and look for other sites."
Town council chairman Justin Robinson said: "The main alternative is by the cemetery at Cuckoo Hill. It is not ideal because there is not really enough space and it is quite far from the centre of town."
Bruton - Terror fears halt recycling bins move
Re: Bruton - Terror fears halt recycling bins move
The obvious place to put the bins would be outside the council offices or town hall. There's usually a car park with nice little bays marked 'Reserved - Big Cheese'. Make the barstewards walk for a few metres to work at least.ajr wrote:"The main alternative is by the cemetery at Cuckoo Hill.
