VILLAGE FOSSILS DISPLAY
11:00 - 27 August 2005
Jurassic fossils will be the main attraction at a rock and fossil roadshow in Saltford on Bank Holiday Monday. The free event will run from 10am to 4pm on the Bristol and Bath Railway Path near the village, and the centrepiece will be a spectacular display of local fossils.
Experts will be on hand throughout the day to identify rock, fossil and mineral specimens taken to the event by visitors.
For children, there will be free fossil samples to take away.
This whole area of the country was submerged beneath the sea 200 million years ago, and the public is being encouraged to find out more about the area's ancient history.
Organiser Simon Carpenter said: "This very popular event has now been running for several years and aims to promote our interesting and varied geology to as many members of the public as possible.
"The fossil-rich rocks outcropping on the edge of the path provide a wonderful backdrop to the event, allowing people to examine fossils at very close hand, to ask questions of our experts and to find out more about organisations locally and nationally that work towards promoting and conserving our geological heritage."
