RAIL ATTACK SENTENCE WELCOMED
11:00 - 08 August 2005
Regional train operator Wessex Trains has urged children not to play around railway tracks as it welcomed a 12-month custodial sentence for a youth following an attack on one of its drivers. On February 28, a train driver from Par depot in Cornwall was injured when a concrete block was thrown from a bridge into his cab window.
The court handed down a 12-month custodial sentence to the 18-year-old responsible for the assault at the beginning of this month.
Alan Wilson, managing director of Wessex Trains, said: "We are very thankful that our driver has now fully recovered and is back to work.
"We welcome this sentencing and hope that it reinforces the message that the railway is not a playground and that all actions have serious consequences."
