RESIDENT CALLS FOR CRASH BARRIER TO BE REPLACED

BY RUTH KELLY

11:00 - 30 July 2005

A Resident living near Bath Spa railway station is fed up at the amount of time it has taken for a crash barrier to be replaced. Casey Nolan, who lives at Halfpenny Bridge, said the crash barrier lying to the east of the bridge by Rossiter Road was removed two months ago by Western Power Distribution.

The power firm had been carrying out work to replace the cables across the bridge.

But Ms Nolan says she cannot understand why it has not been put back, and is concerned small children may injure themselves.

In a letter to Bath and North East Somerset Council, which is responsible for highways matters, she said: "I am worried that a number of small children are walked along the barrier on their way to school by their parents, and the structure is now sagging where there is a missing support.

"We don't want litigious parents to have any excuse to sue when junior cuts his leg open as the barrier crumples beneath him."

A B &NES Council spokesman said: "They (WPD) have assured us their contractor will do it as soon as possible."

"It is not our responsibility to put the barrier up. Our role as highways maintenance is to encourage WPD to do it as soon as possible."
