DISCARDED COAT FORCES TUNNEL CLOSURE
11:00 - 10 June 2005
A Railway tunnel was closed for an hour- and-a-half because a sports jacket had been left on the line. Network Rail launched an investigation after a passenger on the 5.43am from Paddington to Cardiff reported hearing a bang while the train passed through Box Tunnel yesterday.
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said the train had been stopped and examined but nothing was found to be wrong.
The tunnel was closed at 7.15am so investigators could look inside to see if there was a problem with the line.
"They found a sports jacket on the track," said the spokeswoman.
The jacket was removed and the line was reopened at 8.45am.
While the tunnel was closed, Great Western services were diverted via Badminton.
However, how the jacket came to be on the track remains a mystery.
"We don't know how it came to be there," said the spokeswoman.
"It could have been pushed off the train by a passenger or it could have been dragged into the tunnel by the train.
"It's a bit of a mystery."
Services were running as normal by 9am.
