The Bristol Railway Archive

I have published my recently completed website of steam in Bristol in 1964.

It contains a number of photo galleries (from 1963-64 period), but also a very large collection of data on steam workings from my original notebooks and those of other enthusiasts at the time.

It has taken six months longer than I thought it would, but after much frustration and learning curves, it is now on the web.

Patrick, May I be the first to congratulate you for such a veritable mine of information you have made available! The photos are priceless and all the better for being integrated into a stand-alone website. I am amazed by the completeness of the records for e.g. summer Saturdays and I assume you have used steam shed records for the round-the-clock info you have provided. What a friendly bunch of staff at Barrow Rd to have let you as a teenager have such access.
I hope you don't mind if I use some of the data to improve the accuracy (or should I say precision) of my own records which also span periods in 1964. I used to frequent as a lad the signal-box at Charfield and could therefore get access to WTTs of the day, but freight trains in particular were somewhat anonymous being recorded only by their bell-codes and whether (in the down direction) they were destined for Westerleigh or Stoke Gifford, so with loco numbers as the common link to your own database, I should be able to beef up details of actual trains hauled.
My sincere congratulations again for embarking and delivering on such a mammoth undertaking!

Thanks, but I think I can just as easily search the individual dated web pages. My own records are quite sparse so comparing mine with yours will not take too long! I have already discovered some errors in my own data caused by freight trains running under different headcodes to those timetabled. I have also found a couple of instances where the loco for a given train differs - probably a recording error on my part.

A fabulous website indeed. What an achievement and a valuable information resource.

What can I say, but brilliant thanks Pat it will be very usefull bookmarked already, Thanks again.

Your efforts have spurred me on to recreate/ re-find as much of my history as I can from the 60s.

Whilst I have said frequently on here that the vast majority of my records got thrown out in 1970, odd bits and pieces have survived - a few pages of a diary here, a box of used tickets there, a number of albums full of dated photographs, and so on.

Whilst I will not be able to restore many of my observational notes from the time, at least I should be able to find out where I was and what I was doing from the odds and ends that have survived.

I was watching a "Star Trek Deep Space Nine" video last night where the plot involved them trying to recreate a deleted computer file by analysing the residue in the computer's hard drive. I think I've set myself a very similar task
