Two things:-

1. What is " Nine Legged Ghost?" I haven't got a clue, SWMBO hasn't got a clue, and Googling it doesn't give any information either ...

???

2. One of my few "claims to fame" in local railway circles is that I was the last fare-paying passenger to alight at Berkeley station. If this proposal goes ahead will I have to try to be the first fare-paying passenger to get on there under the new regime? ;)

Actually Robin, I don't have a clue where ' Nine Legged Ghost ' came from either !
It was a fairly familiar term that was often used in my sales career when discussing the merits of a sales lead.
If the lead was ' iffy ' it was classed as chasing a nine legged ghost.
In truth though I'm not sure of it's origin.

Maybe like ' Fill your boots time ' which I learned was probably from quite innocent beginnings.
