According to a book I received for Christmas, No.1 tunnel was 326yds long, 30ft wide and 35ft high at its entrances, an average of 30ft above rail level inside, and was 76ft below the surface at its deepest.
The need for extensions to Bristol East Depot required the tunnel to be demolished and the resulting cutting to be widened. The work was finished on "Sunday 31st March 1889".
The book also states that "When No.1 Tunnel was originally bored, two nodules nicknamed 'the apple and the pear' were discovered in the sandstone and Brunel set them up near its east portal, though they have since been removed".

If you go to www.old-maps.co.uk , search for co-ordinate 361850,172496, and then select Somerset, you will see an 1887 map showing the No.1 tunnel.
If you then click on Enlarged View, you will see No.1 and No.2 tunnel, and the West end of No.3 tunnel (bottom right).
