Actually I have this problem all the time. My work computer and my home computer have completely different tolerances in the way they display pics. My work 'puter doesn't see 'dark' pics at all, but the same pic viewed at home is fine.
It makes processing some of the pics for the website very difficult because I have to try to guess if other people are going to see them once I've uploaded them!
I encounter the same 'problem' all of the time with pictures taken with a digital camera - not just with night time shots but with bright daylight shots of landscapes etc.
The same picture can vary drastically between two different monitors (in particular between a 'tube' monitor and a flat screen) and there is a further difference when the shots are professionally developed onto good old fashioned photographic paper.
Whenever I've done this I've simply stuck my old hard drive in my new 'puter as a slave disc. That way you can have a clean system on your new harddrive and still use all your old programs on the old hardrive, or copy the files across and then remove the old harddrive.
You say laptop hard drives are a different size, but what about the cables? Is it possible to have your old hardrive just hanging off the end of the cable, outside the laptop, so you can copy the files over, or do they use a different cable size?
