Private owner wagons

Post by tonyperks »

When the railways were nationalised, all the private owner wagons, got numbered in the 'P' prefix ,So my question is were the wagons owned by the collierys or brewerys etc, if so when nationalised did the Co's get paid for their own rolling stock to be taken into state ownership?, or did they have an agreement something like procor and other Co's used to do leasing wagons etc in private liverys.

Private Owner Wagons

I've no idea. Interesting question ....

But I do know, years before nationalisation, there was a scheme by the Big Four shortly after they were formed, to register all private owner wagons, because the private owners were attrocious at maintaining them.

A bit like today really!! That's progress ....
