Hey guys,
i'm rapidly approaching the time where I leave Uni and Bristol for that matter to head back to my native Birmingham. Basically, my dad, being an enthusiast also, wants to go around the Bristol area and surrounding areas for that matter by train. Obviously the Severn Beach line is a must (because i live in Montpelier) but im not sure where else we could go?? In the Midlands (and other places i no doubt) you can get all day rail rover tickets for specific boundaries, is there one available for the Sout West?Its not happening for a good few weeks yet (got my finals first) but i reckn i should start planning to get the most out of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From FGW you can purchase a 'First Bus and Rail Card'. ú9 per day / ú36 per week. This is valid for travel, on the railways, within the former Avon area i.e.: Pilning / Severn Beach / Bath / Weston-super-Mare.

It is also valid on FirstBus services down to Highbridge and to Devizes, in the east of the region.

If you are planning to stay only in the Bristol area, then this is the best option, as it is valid all day - the only restriction being that you have to use First services.

Alternatively, you might want to consider a 'Freedom of the South West' rover - these now have time restrictions imposed on them (journey to begin after 09:00) during the working week.

Pilning - A must. Good line of sight up and down the lines and a good mix of traffic. Travel out there on public transport might be an issue.

St Andrews Road/ Bulk Handling Terminal on an evening is always worth a watch, was down there lastnight (pics to follow) having a mootch round.

Pearce's Road Bridge just down the road from Parkway is also a good spot as is Filton Abbey Wood as good mix of traffic.

Also a few points along the Bath line is always worth a look
