About 3.35 I noticed a 'convoy' of five Freighlinter Class 66 heading towards Barton Hill and Temple Meads, whilst I was on a train bound for the Severn Beach line. Is this some sort of record?

Isn't five the maximum allowed?

There were just three of them between platforms 9 and 11 just after 4.10. Presumably two had uncoupled and departed.

Have wondered if the convoy had anything to do with this news story.

There's a rather larger convoy that leaves Imingham on a Saturday - has been reported with 7 or 8 66s in it.

Where would the Freightliner Class 66s be based, or serviced in Bristol? I still cannot work out where five of these beasts were heading.

There's always a selection of "Freds" in Kingsland Road sidings opposite Barton Hill. Also, Freightliner are using Taunton's Fairwater Yard for engineering trains during the current track relaying between Weston and Taunton.

Four always used to be the most I saw here but early this morning there must have been six or seven. Difficult to tell in the dark.
