This has been a fascinating thread & I've been mightily impressed by the analysis carried out by the main contributors - thanks very much for your efforts. I've really no doubt that the location has been found - though the single/double track issue provides a bit of a puzzle. Are there any LSWR experts here: is the tall gate post with its light on top typical LSWR?

It's a shame that a now shot isn't possible due to a new building being built in front of the workhouse.

Incidentally Jules to have any details on the negative, i.e. size, glass or film? I was wondering what type of camera may of been used.

Well not for a day or two.

I'm reasonably happy that the photo does show double track. Between the two bottom planks of the fence on the right hand side you can see the side/top of the near rail and the top of the far rail of the down(?) line. Beneath and hidden under the bottom plank you can see the lower side of the near rail of the up(?) line.

All i know is they were found (as a large collection of negatives) in the Ashton district of Bristol and in a rubbish skip. The gentleman who acquired them (shipscompass on flickr) made prints ... and posted them.
